When does the course start?
Your training begins in September or January.


How does the application process work?
First you will need to fill in an application form which includes a reference from your school or college. We will then call up suitable applicants for interview. The interviews take place around the country.


Are there any physical requirements?
You must pass a statutory medical test.


Are females able to join?
Women are of course eligible to apply and several have qualified through the Maritime London scheme. However, women applicants should be comfortable with working in a male-dominated environment. The majority of British officers are male.


Are all my costs taken care of during my training?
All costs excluding accommodation and food are covered by the scholarship. You do however receive a grant of approximately £8000 per year to help cover costs.


How will I be assessed?
You will be constantly assessed whilst at college and will be required to complete a training portfolio whilst at sea. There is a final oral examination by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.


Will I harm my career prospects by not going to university?
No - with your qualifications you will have numerous opportunities to work on a variety of ships. If after a few years at sea, you want to come ashore there are numerous career options available to you including well paid jobs in the legal, insurance and surveying sectors.


Why do I need A level physics and maths?
Navigation, stability and engineering skills are technical and require a good understanding of science and maths.


What’s the money like?
As a junior officer you can expect to earn in the region of £25,000 a year - often tax free.


Is seafaring a lonely business?
As a seafarer you will be expected to spend long periods away from home. You will however be part of a tight knit crew and travel the world.
