Careers at Sea
Working aboard a ship is an exciting and challenging career choice. With experience of working with hi-tech and sophisticated equipment, cargo handling, leadership and engineering skills, merchant navy officers are highly valued professionals, responsible for moving passengers and cargo safely around the world.

The work onboard a ship is always varied. In addition to navigation or engineering skills using the latest information technology, considerable leadership and managerial skills are essential to ensure the safety and well being of the community of people living and working together at sea.

Wages
UK officers enjoy good salaries which compare very favourably with their shore-based contemporaries. A young and newly qualified officer in his or her early 20’s could expect to earn a salary in the region of £25,000 (often tax free).

Whilst most of your contemporaries will still be paying off university tuition fees, you could be enjoying a career on the high seas, commanding a good salary, low overheads and have no training fees to pay back.

Passport to the World
Working aboard a ship could take you to anywhere in the world. Although ships do not stay for lengthy periods in port, seafarers do travel to all four corners of the globe. Life aboard a ship can also be very cosmopolitan with crew drawn from many different nations.

Holidays
Seafarers on the deep-sea trades are away from home for lengthy periods, but do also enjoy lengthy holidays. A tour of duty could take you around the world for four months, a paid for flight home followed by a couple of months holiday.

Good Prospects
There is currently a serious worldwide shortfall of qualified officers and as a highly skilled British officer your skills will be very much in demand.
