
Training Details
The Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship is administered
by Chiltern Maritime,
one of the UK’s leading trainers of seafarers. The company has over
20 years of experience in training seafarers.
Phase One
Deck: Six week induction course covering –
• shipboard familiarisation
• basic seamanship
• firefighting
• personal survival
• safety
Engineer: Six month induction training
The training takes place at colleges in Glasgow, South Shields (Newcastle) or Warsash (Southampton).
Phase Two
This phase of training is spent aboard a ship putting theory into practice and learning skills which can only be learnt at sea. Some of the skills you will master will include managing a navigational watch (in effect taking charge of safety of the ship); planning a passage using charts; using radar and high tech aids; radio communications and satellite systems); manoeuvring the ship; cargo handling; crew management; pollution prevention; firefighting; lifeboat use and medical care.
Maritime London cadets can gain experience aboard a huge variety of commercial vessels including tankers, cruise ships, bulk carriers, container ships and many more.
Phase Three to Five
You will spend your time both at college and sea
Qualifications
Deck Officers
You will qualify as a Watchkeeping Officer, holding a Maritime and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency, an NVQ level 3 in Merchant Vessel Operations and an HND in Nautical Science.
Engineering Officers
You will qualify as a Watchkeeping Officer, holding a Maritime and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency, an NVQ level 3 in Merchant Vessel Engineering and an HND in Marine Engineering.
Electrotechnical Officer
As for an engineer officer, but with extra electrical and electronic equipment skills.
At the end of your cadetship you will be free to choose your own career path including the shipowning company for which you wish to work. Maritime London Officer Cadets receive the highest standard of training in the industry and their skills are very much in demand from a variety of shipping companies.
Within four years of commencing your training, you will be ready to take up an appointment as a Watchkeeping Officer in an ocean-going vessel. You will continue to expand your knowledge, gaining in experience and competence and within 10 years could qualify to become a Master Mariner or a Chief Engineer with total responsibility for the operation of a ship and the management of the crew.
